WyeSoft Pixel Python is our 2025 take on the classic Snake genre for the ZX Spectrum, inspired primarily by MSX Vicious Viper and QBasic Nibbles, but with several twists. Game modes range from standard snake to hybrid genre modes such as Snakeout and Snakepong.

Pixel Python boasts the following features:

1-4 players (keyboard/Kempston/cursor - any combination)
8 game modes
36 Nibbles-style level layouts, 12 maze-style level layouts, and 12 Head-to-Head level layouts.
Random level generators with 20 thousand possible level layouts
Graphics inspired by Vicious Viper
Many pickups and power-ups
22 unlockable cheat codes
3 menu screen minigames
Highly responsive controls

Although Pixel Python was designed for PC emulators and systems like Retro's "The Spectrum", it should be possible to play it on a real ZX Spectrum (48K+). To do so, you would need to convert the .TAP files to audio files using a utility like TAP2WAV and either record them onto cassette tapes or play them from a PC to the Spectrum via an AUX cable. Any modification or file manipulation required to achieve this is fully permitted by WyeSoft.

The optional Windows and DOS packages include a copies of the RustZX emulator and the Z80 Spectrum Emulator for DOS, respectively, along with launcher menus.

All tape files can be loaded independently.

Controls
--------
Each player can be configured on the menu screen to use the keyboard, a
Kempston joystick or a cursor joystick (emulated or otherwise).  Only one
player can use each type of joystick at a time, but all players can use the
keyboard simultaneously if desired, though this compromises responsiveness.

All keyboard controls can be fully customised.  The pause key must be pressed
before the quit key to return to the menu screen.

You do not need to use the keyboard to start a game if you are playing solo
with a Kempston joystick.  Press any button on the joystick to switch the green
player's input device to Kempston.  Then you can change the world with the left
or right stick/D-pad controls, and the level or difficulty with the up and down
controls.  When you've chosen your settings, press the Fire button to start the
game.

Game modes
----------
There are 8 game modes available.  Fields and Ramble are the closest to classic
snake.  The other game modes have some unique twists, and some mix snake with
other genres.

Available game modes:

FIELDS (1-2 players)
Select a Nibbles-style field level and eat as many eggs as you can in a single
life.

RAMBLE (1 player)
Make your way through an entire field world with a limited number of lives,
achieving a score goal to unlock each successive level.

TUNNELS (1-2 players)
Select a tunnel level and navigate the maze, eating as many eggs as possible in
one life.

GAUNTLET (1 player)
Play through a tunnel world in order with a limited number of lives, eating all
eggs to progress.

SNAKELETS (1-4 players)
Play a field level as a baby snake with more room to move and space for four
players.

HEAD-TO-HEAD (2 players)
Play against another player in matching miniature field levels.  Eat eggs to
spawn wall tiles in your opponent's field.

SNAKEOUT (1-2 players)
Break out of the level by bouncing the ball into the wall of blocks around the
outside.

SNAKEPONG (1-2 players)
Play ping-pong against a bot or another player, using your snake as a paddle.

Worlds
------
Worlds 1 to 3 each contain 12 unique field levels and World 4 contains 12
tunnel levels.  The levels of each world are arranged in order by approximate
difficulty.  Each successive world is also a little harder overall than the
last.

World X is a compilation of the hardest field levels from Worlds 1 to 3, only
available in Ramble mode.

World R is available in Fields and Snakelets modes, and World Z in Tunnels
mode.  Their levels are randomly generated, based on the chosen difficulty (0
to 9).  Select World R/Z and then press the corresponding number key to choose
the difficulty, or press X to enter the "seed" of a previously-played level to
return to it.

While playing a randomly-generated level, its seed (a 4-figure number) will be
displayed in the upper-left corner of the screen.  Due to the nature of
randomisation, eggs in World R may occasionally become trapped in areas that
are impossible to reach.  When this happens, press the quit key (without
pausing) to respawn the egg.

Pickups and power-ups
---------------------
Collectible items spawn around the level.  These provide the player with
various boosts.  Some pickups are only available in certain game modes.

Available pickups:
Purple Egg        Gain points; increase snake speed and length
Blue Egg          Increase snake speed
Yellow Egg        Increase snake length
Extra Life        Gain 1 life
Decelerate        Reduce movement speed (timed in some game modes)
Trim              Reduce snake length
Double Points     Receive double points (timed)
Nitro Boost       Hold movement direction for super speed (timed)
Cannibal          Eat through your own tail or other players (timed)
Wraparound        Outer wall teleports you to opposite side (timed)
Wormhole          Hit backward direction to teleport to spawn (timed)
Manual            Only move when pressing a direction key (timed)
Switchback        Hit backward direction to reverse movement (timed)
Bulldozer         Eat through 1 inner wall tile
Full Charge       Max out ball power

Timed power-ups last for approximately 20-30 seconds, depending on the game
mode.

Cheat codes and hidden features
-------------------------------
Cheat codes are unlocked by reaching certain goals within the game. When a
cheat code is unlocked, it will appear on-screen in capital letters and a
pink/purple colour.

Codes can be entered on the menu screen (wait for the beep after each key),
though some codes only work on certain game modes.

You can test this by entering "WYESOFT".  This will display the game's version
number and the WyeSoft website URL if done correctly.

Although referred to as cheat codes, many of them are extra features or game
settings, rather than cheats.  The main menu is designed to remain simple, with
little text and minimal key presses required to start the game with default
settings, while enabling greater customisation through unlockable features.

Emulator users who regularly use the same cheats and settings might prefer to
use save states to avoid re-entering the codes each time.

Playing on original hardware
